Richard G. Balzer, age 78 of Forksville, Pa., passed away early Friday morning, April 9, 2004, at the Dar-Way Nursing Home in Estella, Pa.
He was born on March 8, 1926 in Williamsport, Pa., a son of the late Harry and Eva Karney Balzer.
Mr. Balzer is a World War II veteran, having served in the United States Army.
On March 20, 1954, he married the former Mary Pardoe Balzer. Richard and Mary have celebrated 50 years of marriage.
In 1960, he became a resident of Sullivan County, having moved from the South Williamsport.
He was a member of the Millview Wesleyan Church, and served as a church a lay leader for several years. He had been very active on many committees within the church.
His other memberships included the V.F.W., and McDermott Post No. 452 American Legion, of Mildred, Pa.
Richard enjoyed time spent hunting, fishing and being in the outdoors. He was also a skilled carpenter and handyman.
Prior to his retirement on December 31, 1987, he was a foreman for PennDOT.
He leaves surviving his wife: Mary Balzer, at home; two daughters: Carole and Gaylord Kilbourn, of Canton, Pa., Diane Cusson, of Forksville, Pa.; a sister: Louise Straub, of E. Petersburg, Pa.; and by four grandchildren: Richard W. Cusson, III, Robert Cusson, Daniel Kilbourn, and Nichole Kilbourn.
A memorial service will be scheduled in the Millview Wesleyan Church at the convenience of the family.
Interment will be in Elkland Friends Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to the: American Alzheimer's Association, Northeast Region, 63 North Franklin Street, Wilkes-Barre, Pa. 18701.
Arrangements were entrusted to the Russell P. McHenry Funeral Home, 119 Carpenter Street, Dushore, Pa.
