NORTH CAROLINA — Melvin Everett Bunker, Jr., age 85, of Clayton, N.C., former longtime resident of Merrimac and Amesbury, died Tuesday afternoon, June 8, 2010 at the home of his son and daughter-in-law, Stephen P. and Pauline (Smith) Bunker, who tenderly cared for him during the past several months. He was the loving husband of Mary S. (Pingree) Bunker.

Born in Merrimac, Aug. 15, 1924, he was the son of the late Melvin E. and Eleanor M. (Hoyt) Bunker. Known by many as "Bud," he was a truck driver, working for Estes Lumber Company of Groveland, and Sargent Lumber Company of Newton, N.H.

In addition to his wife, son and daughter-in-law of Clayton, N.C., he is survived by a daughter, Nancy L. Thurlow and husband Alfred of Newbury; a brother, Lloyd F. Bunker and wife Claire of Merrimac; two sisters, Shirley E. Roy of Amesbury and Muriel J. Eaton and husband Roland, Jr. of East Wakefield; his grandsons, Stephen P. Bunker, Jr. of Hampton, N.H., Randolph L. Thurlow of Haverhill; his granddaughters, Amy L. Thurlow of Newbury and Susanah L. Thurlow, of Philadelphia; his great-grandchildren, Austin D. Bunker of Battle Creek, Mich., and Helen L. Thurlow of Newbury; along with several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sisters, Barbara L. Doucette, Dorothy A. Benjamin, and Bertha M. Soucy; and his granddaughter, Laurie A. Bunker.

ARRANGEMENTS: Visiting hours at the Highland Chapel of Paul C. Rogers & Sons Family Funeral Home, 2 Hillside Ave., Amesbury, will be Sunday, June 13, 2010 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral services at the funeral home will be Monday at 11 a.m., followed by interment in Union Cemetery, Amesbury. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Hospice of Wake County, 250 Hospice Circle, Raleigh, NC 27607.
