At the time of his death he was the oldest inhabitant of Georgetown. He resided on West Street. He came to Georgetown in 1797 and witnessed the laying of the cornerstone for the Capitol building by George Washington. In 1812 he witnessed the burning of the Capitol and other buildings by the British. Mr. Dean established the first ropewalk in the District and was in the business of ropemaking until 1867.
