Chapin enlisted for Civil War service in Comkpany H, 103rd Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, July 29, 1862, at Elyria, Ohio(Lorain County), for a term of 3 years. Occupation: Farmer. He was wounded in a hip at the Battle of Resaca, GA, May 14, 1864. He was discharged, February 16, 1865, at Columbus, Ohio by Order of General Hooker.

His name is on the base of the Civil War soldier monument, misspelled as "Barrister, Chapin", in Butternut Ridge Cemetery, located a Butternut Ridge and Durkee Roads, Eaton Township, Lorain County Ohio.
