John Killen was a large Houston county land owner. While the census records record him simply as a "farmer", he served as much more.

He was a delegate to the State convention of the Union Democratic Republican party in 1835. He was Houston County's State Representative in 1841. He served as a Houston County Commissioner along with Howell Cobb and William H. Taylor in (at least) 1844. In 1850, again he worked with Cobb and others in Southern Rights meetings. He was also a Judge and a Justice of the Peace.

Killen may have been born in Maryland as one source notes, moving very young to Cumberland County, North Carolina. He moved to the Darlington District, South Carolina, where he reportedly married Joan Jolly before 1820. She died in childbirth, and the twins also died.

His second wife was Louise Parrott, with whom he had six children. He moved to Houston County by 1835, where he married Margaret Ann Shine. Killen and Margaret had 11 more children. Two of their sons died in service to the CSA.Age 84. He leaves 17 children and 85 grandchildren.
