In 1950 she and her parents and two siblings lived on a dairy farm on Atlas Tie Road in Dalton Precinct, Kootenai County, ID. Her father worked as a partner on the farm, with an income in 1949 of $390 for 52 weeks of work.

Her family was camping in the Madison Canyon near Hebgen Dam when the famous 1959 earthquake occurred. Her mother Irene and brother Phillip, born about 1944, survived, but her father and brother and sister were killed.
