Fred was very amiable and had a ready laugh. His obituary in The Times Herald-Record read as follows:

FRED J. HERBST Jr. Milford, Pa. Fred J. Herbst Jr. of Milford, Pa., a retired electrician for Delaware Valley School District, Westfall, Pa., and a lifelong resident of the area, died Sunday, Nov. 26, 2000, at Twin Cedars Assisted Living Center, Shohola, Pa. He was 82. The son of Fred J. Herbst and Leanna S. Shepard [sic] Herbst, he was born June 11, 1918, in Milford, Pa. He was married to the late Helen Shimer. He was a member of the Milford First Presbyterian Church, Milford, Pa; and the Milford Fire Department, Milford, Pa. Survivors include three grandchildren, Dawn Nemac, Leslie Swingle and Danielle Newton, all of Clarkesburg, Va; five great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and a friend, Mary Cook. He was predeceased by one son, Fred J. Herbst III; three sisters, Margaret Wolfe, Emma Watson and Marion Santos; and one brother, H.T. Herbst. Friends may call from — to 3 p.m. today, Tuesday, Nov. 28, at the Knight-Auchmoody Funeral Home, 154 East Main St., Port Jervis. Funeral services will be held at — p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 19, at First Presbyterian Church, Milford, Pa. The Rev. Benjamin Willis will officiate. Burial will be in Milford Cemetery, Milford. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Knight-Auchmoody Funeral Home, Port Jervis.

In addition to what is mentioned above, Fred was instrumental in forming the Pike County Communications System, and was the first Pike County voting machine custodian.
