Obituary

Fred William Ellinghaus III (Bill) was born in Baltimore, MD May 4, 1920 in the family home built by his grandfather, the Rev. Dr. Robert James Bateman from Bristol, England who died on the Titanic. Bill completed elementary and high schools in Baltimore.

War clouds were gathering in August 1942 when Bill enlisted in the Army Air Corps. He was a test pilot at Wright-Patterson Field, Dayton, OH. He then served for 29 months at Florida and Louisiana air bases, training B-26 bomber pilots for overseas combat duty. With 2,000 flight hours as a B-26 pilot, Bill was made group leader of the 397th Bomb Group, 597th Squadron, Ninth Air Force, when he shipped overseas. He was shot down over Frankfurt, Germany, and was MIA and POW. His back was broken during interrogation. He eventually escaped and met American forces shortly thereafter. He was awarded the Silver Star, the Purple Heart and the French Croix de Guerre with gold star. He was rehabilitated at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington, D.C. It was there he met Kathleen McClanahan, an occupational therapist. They were married July 6, 1947.

In 1951 Bill earned a B.S. degree from the University of Baltimore, and they moved to Boulder, CO, where he completed an M.S. degree in 1953. He was a research associate in the Bureau of Business Research and taught for a number of years at CU. Their daughter, Nancy Jeanne, was born in Baltimore, and son, Joseph William, was born in Boulder. Both live in the Boulder area.

While affiliated with the University, Kathleen and Bill became close friends with Nouri Ibrahim, the first Saudi Arabian to graduate from CU. This friendship led to their involvement in the host family program for CU's foreign students. Through the host family program they made many lifelong friends and traveled worldwide for many years.

Bill was director of CENTROPLEX, the downtown business association for many years and contributed to the original plans for the Pearl Street Mall. Later he was assistant administrator and business manager of the Boulder Medical Center for 12 years until he went into real estate.

Bill and Kathleen have enjoyed many years of volunteer activities both locally and nationally. Bill's volunteerism included serving on Boards of Boulder Tomorrow, Special Transit, Boulder Community Hospital, Boulder Philharmonic (Treasurer 11 years), Boulder Friends of International Students, Boulder Council for International Visitors and People-to People International. In 1971 he was appointed to the United States Commission for UNESCO. On March 18, 2002, Kathleen and Bill Ellinghaus moved to Frasier Meadows Manor from their Boulder home of 44 years.

Visitation will be held 4 to 7 pm Tuesday June 10 at Crist Mortuary, 3395 Penrose Place. Mass of Christian burial will be held 10 am Wednesday June 11, 2008 at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, with Father Bill Breslin celebrant. Interment will follow at Green Mountain Cemetery, with military honors by the US Air Force Honor Guard. Services are being handled by Crist Mortuary. Following interment, a reception will be held at Frasier Meadows Manor, 350 Ponca Place, Boulder, in the Mountain Vista room at about 12:30 pm.
