Dr William Earl Beard, 93, Topeka, died Monday, Jan 14, at a local convalescent center.
Dr Beard was a dentist in the National Reserve Building downtown 50 years before he retired.
He was born July 22, 1891, at Overbrook, the son of William Augustus and Melissa Kinney Beard. He attended Overbrook schools and was graduated from Overbrook High School, attended Washburn University and was graduated from the Kansas City School of Dentistry, Kansas City, Mo.
He was a captain in the dental corps with the Army during World War I.
Dr Beard was a member of Kansas Avenue United Methodist Church, Kappa Sigma social fraternity, Topeka Dental Society, Senior Citizens Chorus and American War Dads. He was a member and past president of the Downtown Kiwanis Club and was an organizer of the Kiwanis Club Pet Parade.
He also was a member and past commander of a post of the American Legion.
He was married to Bernice Cosper in 1914 at Joplin, Mo. She died Jan 22, 1975.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs Helen Harwell, Fresno, Calif., and Mrs Marjorie Lovewell, Boynton Beach, Fla; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 am Thursday at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery.
