U.S. Congressman. Born in Sneek, Holland, he immigrated to the United States with his parents attended the public schools of Grand Rapids, Michigan and moved to New Jersey in 1897. There he was a businessman and banker, plus a member of the Passaic County Board of Chosen Freeholders, (1906-13). In 1914, he was elected as a Republican to the Sixty-third Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Robert Gunn Bremner, reelected to the Sixty-fourth and Sixty-fifth Congresses, serving until 1919. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he was publisher of the Herald-News of Passaic-Clifton and president of the Union Building and Investment Company until his retirement.
