Benjamin Franklin "Ben" Bennett, Jr., 89, of Yates Center passed away on Thursday, June 16, 2011, at Coffey County Hospital in Burlington.

He was born August 17, 1921, east of Lafontaine, Kansas, to Benjamin Franklin Bennett, Sr., and Katie (Bosick) Bennett. He grew up at Lafontaine and attended school there, and then worked as a laborer in Texas.

In 1939, he married Thelma Lois Altman, and to this union two daughters were born – Rita Joyce and Patricia Gail. This marriage ended in divorce in 1947, and Ben returned to Kansas with his two daughters.

In 1952, he married Josephine Stephens Pinnell at Elk City, Kansas. That same year he became an employee of Union Gas Company at Fredonia, and his family lived there until 1964, when he transferred with the company to Yates Center. He retired from the gas company in 1986, after 34 ½ years of service.

He was a member and former trustee of the First Baptist Church in Yates Center. He was an avid gardener, fisherman, and family man – he loved children, and was a devoted husband.

He was preceded in death by his mother in 1929, when he was eight years old, and by his father and stepmother in 1965, and by two grandsons, Mike Nichols and Stephen Carpenter, and four brothers and two sisters.

His wife, Josephine Eileen "Jo" Bennett, preceded him in death on March 8, 1998.

He is survived by one sister, Della Pearl Bloss, of Moundridge; one son, Steve Pinnell and wife Maxine, of Clyde; four daughters, Pat Preset of Fredonia, Joyce Beal of Iola, Marsha Ivey and husband Ken of Fredonia, and Connie Walker and husband Leon of Yates Center; 21 grandchildren, 53 great-grandchildren and 30 great-great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, June 18, 2011, at the New York Valley Church in Yates Center, with burial following in Yates Center Cemetery. The family will meet with friends for visitation at the Church on Saturday afternoon from 1:00 PM until service time. Memorial contributions to the "Joplin Tornado Relief Fund may be sent in care of the funeral home.
