US Congressman. He was successful in mercantile pursuits, was a member of the board of aldermen, Mayor of Virginia, Illinois, (1878-80) and clerk of the circuit court of Cass County. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1887, commenced the practice of law, engaged in the newspaper business and was secretary of the Illinois State Senate. In 1895, he presented credentials as a Democratic Member-elect to the Fifty-fourth Congress, serving until 1896. An election; unsuccessful candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice and engaged in the real-estate business, until his death at age 89.
