U.S. Congressman. Immigrating to the United States with his parents, he learned the printing trade and worked at German-language daily newspaper, in Chicago, Illinois. Relocating to Wisconsin, in 1896, he engaged in agricultural pursuits on a farm in near Mellen, in 1915. He was clerk of the school board, (1916-33), Mellen town assessor, (1916-21), Mellen chairman of the town board, (1921-32), conducted farmers’ institutes throughout the State for the University of Wisconsin College of Agriculture, (1920-33) and served on the Wisconsin State Assembly, (1927-33). He was a member of the Wisconsin State Senate, (1933-34) and elected as a Progressive to the Seventy-fourth Congress and to the next three succeeding Congresses, serving (1935-43). An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, (1943-45), was a member of the Wisconsin Assembly, (1946, 48, 50, 52) and served in the State Wisconsin Senate, in 1954. He died of a heart attack at age 78.
