William B Houchens was born in Sharpsburg, Illinois. Was taught to read music by his mother Mary. He played the fiddle, banjo, violin, piano and zither. He taught classical piano and violin at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music and later taught music at his music school in Dayton, Ohio. In 1910 he Married Eula Lee Baird. They were married 37 years. In October 1947 he married Ada Cooper. He recorded music at Gennet/Starr Records, Richmond Indiana in 1923. Some of his early recordings were, "Arkansas Traveler", Turkey in the Straw",and "Long-Eared Mule". He recorded under his name and pseudonyms as 'Uncle Billy Hawkins' and 'Will Houchens and the Mountaineers'.
