Frank J. Darmafall, 72, of Nova and formerly of Lorain, passed away Thursday, June 16, 2011, at his residence following a sudden illness.

Born May 28, 1939, in Lorain, he moved to Nova in 1999.

Frank worked as a guidance counselor in the Lorain City Schools for more than 30 years.

He was a longtime member of the former St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Lorain, and currently a member of Our Lady Help of Christians in Litchfield.

Frank was an avid gardener, fisherman and cook and loved to share the fruits of his labors with everyone. He enjoyed singing in the church choir and always had a song for every occasion and words of encouragement for everyone he came into contact with.

He had a special appreciation for children, working after retirement teaching at two other schools, as well as spending three years with Ashland Parenting Plus, working with at-risk teens.

Surviving is his wife of 50 years, Vera (nee Zaro); sons, Frank and Joe of Nova, and Michael of Lorain; grandchildren, Zachary, Sean, Michael and Matthew (fiancé Chastin); a sister Mildred "Millie" Hawley of Bristow, Va.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank in 1976, and Johanna "Jennie" (nee Striner) Darmafall in 1987; sisters, Genevieve "Aunt Jean" Kure in 2007, and Joan Cochran in 1989.

The family will receive friends 2 to 7 p.m. Sunday, June 19, 2011, at Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain, where funeral services will take place 9:15 a.m. Monday, June 20, 2011, followed by Mass at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 175 St. Joseph Drive, Amherst. The Rev. Ronald J. Bryda, pastor of Our Lady Help of Christians, will officiate with the Rev. Lawrence Martello and the Rev. Thomas Rath will concelebrate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.
