SALINA BOY SHOT TO DEATH,
ESCALANTE SUSPECT HELD
Scott Rasmussen, 15-year-old Salina cattle hand, was shot and killed Thursday night and an Escalante man was in custody Friday in the Garfield County jail, pending further investigation.
George Middleton, Garfield County Sheriff, and Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Otho Bulkley said the youth died almost instantly from a .22 revolver bullet in the neck. The shooting occurred at Ruby's Cabins Motel in Escalante at 9:50 p.m.
Officers said the youth was staying with his father, LaMar Rasmussen, at the cabins while they were working cattle on the desert east and south of Escalante.
The victim, accompanied by Harvey Dean Gates and Ronnie Schow, both Escalante, had taken some horses to the corrals for the night and were walking back to the cabins when the shooting occurred.
In custody pending further investigation Friday was Francis Imlay, 25, Escalante, a resident at the motel.
Officers said Mr. Imlay's wife had in the past complained of window peepers and Mr. Imlay said he heard the boys talking and went out with the gun.
He told officers he ordered them to stop and when they failed to do so, fired two shots, intended as warnings, into the air. One of the bullets struck the Rasmussen youth in the neck.
Sheriff Middleton said the Rasmussens were staying in a cabin adjoining the one in which Mr. and Mrs. Imlay resided.
Young Rasmussen was pronounced dead at the scene by a Panguitch physician.
An inquest will be conducted Saturday at 10 a.m. in Escalante before Justice of the Peace J. B. Osborn by Ken Chamberlain, Garfield County Attorney.
