Gerald Elmer Basie was born to Elmer and Bella Basie of Longview.
At the age of 3, his family moved to Gibbings, MN, where they lived for five years, then returned to Longview where Gerald attended local schools, graduating from R. A. Long High School in 1955. He was drafted into the Army, served two years stationed in Europe. He worked for at Longview Fibre Co., more than 30 years, retiring in 2003. In 1960, Gerald moved from his Longview home to Tower Road, east of Castle Rock. When Mt. St. Helens erupted in 1980, his home was destroyed by mud flow, but he rebuilt on the same land parcel on higher ground. When Tower Road was rerouted, the original road portion to Jerry's property was renamed Basie Road, which serves several residences today. He loved the outdoors, was an avid hunter, fisherman and gun collector. He was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association and Local 21 of ILWU.
Surviving are an aunt, Cleone Perala in Minnesota; many cousins, including Harold Schultz in California and Ken Mackinen in Colorado; and his closest friends, Don Lieurance and Jim Hautala.
At Gerald's request, no service will be held. Arrangements are by Hubbard Funeral Home
