William Woodburn, Sr

US Congressman. A member of the Republican Party, he served in the US House of Representatives from the State of Nevada from March 1875 until March 1877 and again for two terms from March 1885 until March 1889. In 1849 at age 11, he immigrated with his parents to the US. After attending St. Charles College in Ellicott City, Maryland where he studied law, he was admitted to the bar in 1866 and moved to Virginia City, Nevada where he established a law practice. From 1871 until 1872 he was the district attorney of Storey County, Nevada and in 1874 he was elected to Congress from Nevada's At-Large district for one term. In 1884 he was elected again and was re-elected in 1886. When his term expired in 1889 he returned to his law practice in Virginia City and was an unsuccessful candidate to Congress in 1892. He died at the age of 76.
