Death Of Evan Marlin At Camp Grant

News was received here this week of the death of Evan Marlin, son of Abbie Marlin of Capitola, and grandson of E. L. Sturgeon, formerly of Cottonwood, in this county.
Evan Marlin was born at Newman October 12, 1896, and died at Camp Grant, Ill., October 7, 1918.
He spent his school days at Soquel Grammar School and at Heald's College, Santa Cruz. When the great war broke out in Europe he was working for the Commissary Co., Chicago. Long before America entered the mighty conflict he tried repeatedly to enlist in the army but without success. Finally however, he was drafted and this time made good. He was sent to Camp Grant, Ill., for training and while there he contracted pneumonia, from which he died at the base hospital. He did his best and made the supreme sacrifice for the cause of humanity and world freedom.

He is survived by his grandfather, Mr. Sturgeon, who is 90 years of age; his mother and his brother, Kenneth, all of Capitola.

The funeral was held at Newman on Tuesday morning, the Rev. A. Jennings of the M. E. Church officiating. The remains were laid to rest in the Cottonwood cemetery.
