Clyde Lewey Jr. passed away Thursday, Jan. 20, 2011, at age 83. He was preceded in death by his parents, Annie Lewey and Leonard Lewey, and great-grandchild, "Little Matt" Cochran. He is survived by his wife, Betty Danley Lewey; sons, Mike Lewey (Wynn), Ronnie Lewey (Marie); daughter, Kathy Floyd (Cary); grandchildren, Matt Cochran (Heather), Corinne Lewey, Claire Lewey, Daniel Lewey; great-grandchildren, Avery Cochran and Jake Cochran; and sisters, Katie Yarborough and Irene Howard (Gene). Mr. Lewey worked a graveyard shift at Reynolds Metals and Alloys for more than 47 years. In all that time, he missed work only once, for back surgery. Early on, having his job meant walking five blocks to north Florence at night in all kinds of weather to catch the bus to the Reynold's Plant; then home again. Later, when he had saved to pay cash for a car, the family recalls often seeing him park close to the street in case of ice or snow to make sure he could get to work. Theirs was a one-income household so that his wife could be at home to care for their children, and eventually, their grandchildren. How he managed on so little sleep - to attend ball games, pay bills (in person and in cash of course), go to the grocery store, make household and car repairs and such during the day - is amazing to consider. His strong work ethic and devotion to his wife and children is his legacy, which is evident in his family. He was a simple man with a 'no excuses' attitude and great determination. And even though he was never shown 'how,' he never failed to provide for his own. Thanks, Clyde. Daddy. Papaw. You were a successful man among men. Now ... rest. "Your work on earth is done." Special thanks are extended to Hospice of North Alabama, caring nurses on fifth floor ECM, Dr. Brown, and the family and friends who supported us with your love and prayers. An online guest book may be viewed and signed via TimesDaily.com/obituaries. A graveside service will be at 1:30 p.m. today Tri-Cities Memorial, with Dr. Eddie Lawrence officiating. Arrangements by Greenview Funeral Home.
