John was a teamster in the oilfields in Oklahoma and Texas during the 1930's. He settled in Overton, Texas in late 1931 where he built a large multi room log house in the South Hills section of Overton where his youngest son was born. That loghouse is now part of the Overton City Park and is on the historic register of the city.
During WWII he worked for Consolidated Vultee Aircraft Company in San Diego, CA. After the war he returned to Texas where he worked for the Cameron Lumber Co in Overton. Then he moved to Edmond, OK and started working in the oilfield trucking industry, hauling pipes and fittings to the various oil companies and drilling sites.
