Mr. J. N. Chapman, residing with his dauhter, Mrs. J. L. Russell and family, a few miles south of Emory, died last Friday after a short illness, and his remains were carried to Farmersville Sunday morning for interment. Mr. Chapman was 73 years old and had been a citizen of Texas for 70 years. But had only been making his home here for the past few years.

Letter from War Department, Washington, D. C., states that J.N. Chapman, private, Co. F, 5th Partisan Rangers, Texas Cavalry, enlisted 30 July 1862 and was reported present 15 February 1863. W.P. Bumpass, age 75 years, of Farmersville, Collin Co., Texas, states that he has known applicant since 1857 and they served in same company.
B.A. Redwine, age not given, states that his father, Joseph Redwine, was 1st Lieutenant of Co. F., 5th Texas Cavalry.
He heard his father say that when Capt. Bumpass was absent, applicant asked to leave to go home to see his family and Redwine gave him a furlough. Correspondence between O.H. Rodes, County Judge of Rains County, Texas and State Comptroller concerning death of applicant.
Application for Mortuary Warrant: Filed by J.L. Russell, son-in-law. J.N. Chapman died 10 November 1917 at home of J.L. Russell, 6 miles southwest of Emory, Rains County, Texas.
Buried Huson Cemetery, Collin County, Texas.
Undertaker: J.A. Ames. Cause of death given by Dr. P.W. Pearson: chronic rheumatism.
John Newton Chapman is buried in the South Huson Cemetery in Farmersville, Collin County, Texas.
