A resident of Delaware County most of his life, Mr. Janney was born near Wheeling. He was the son of William and Elizabeth (McCrery) Janney.
After graduating from Muncie High School in 1903, he earned a civil engineering degree from Purdue University in 1908.
In his private practice, Mr. Janney drew plans for a number of subdivisions. As city engineer, he did prelininary planning for seven bridges built in Muncie in 1937 and as surveyor he planned the county road numbering system.
He was a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity at Purdue, the Muncie Club, Exchange Club and Muncie Lodge 433, F&AM. Mr. Janney also was a member of First Presbyterian Church and had served at various times as an elder, deacon and trustee of the church. He had been a director of Citizens Finance Co. for a number of years.
Surviving are his wife, the former Helen Bowman, whom he married in Muncie Sept. 25, 1920; two daughters, Mrs. Helen (Janney) Sterett, Champaign, Ill., and Mrs. Catherine (Janney) Swadley, Machias, Maine; two sons, William T. Janney, Muncie, and Benjamin Bowman Janney, New York City; a brother, Carleton R. Janney, Indianapolis, and three grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the chapel of First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Lewis Weber Gishler officiating. Burial will be in Beech Grove Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. Meeks Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
