Nellie Maud Gail was born in 1879 in Kanas. She appears in the 1880 census with her family in Marshall County, in the northeastern part of the state. Her parents, natives of Illinois, may have relocated to Nebraska at some point in time as that state is sometimes cited as her birthplace.
In 1909, Nellie Gail married Lewis F. Moulton, 25 years her senior, in Ventura County, California. Moulton, an Illinois native, was a well established landowner in Saddleback Valley and his largest holding, Moulton Ranch, encompassed the area's present day community of Nellie Gail Ranch. Nellie and Lewis Moulton had two daughters, Charlotte and Louisa. Mrs. Moulton was reputedly fond of horses and occasionally rode sidesaddle though she seems to have preferred carriage riding.
In 1938, Lewis Moulton died. Mrs. Moulton, her daughters and the widow of Lewis Moulton's partner, continued to manage the property until it was purchased by developers in the 1960's. Nellie Gail Moulton died at the age of 94 in 1973.
Today, in 2011, there are 20 miles of riding trails in Nellie Gail Ranch for the enjoyment of residents and horses alike.
