Was a laborer prior to enlisting in the 7th U. S. Cavalry on 4 November 1872 as a private.

At the Battle of the Little Big Horn he was in Donald McIntosh's Company G. Company G was one of the troops that were with Reno's attack of the Indian village. He was lucky as he was able to make the retreat successfully and get back across the river. He saw action with Benteen and Reno on top of the hill for the reminder of the battle.
