US Congressman. Studied law as a young man, be elected to enter the farming and lumber business, in which he found success. During the Civil War he was elected to represent New York's 19th District in the United States House of Representatives, suceeding Richard H. Franchot in the seat, and serving from 1863 to 1865. He was later elected to represent New York's 21st District, and served his second term from 1875 to 1877.
