Gloria Vivienne Cockerham Langston 85, died of pneumonia on June 12, 2011, at Inova Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church, Virginia. She had suffered from Alzheimer's disease for many years. Funeral services will be on Saturday, June 18 at First Baptist Church in Yazoo City at 10:30 a.m., followed by burial at Glenwood Cemetery. The Reverend Lewis Kalil will officiate. Visitation will be Friday evening, June 17, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Strickin-King Funeral Home in Yazoo City.

Gloria Langston was born on July 4, 1925, in Eden, Mississippi, where her father was a telegraph operator for the Illinois Central Railroad. After the Great Flood of 1927, the family moved to Canton, Mississippi, where Gloria graduated from Canton High School in 1943. She graduated from Hinds Junior College and attended a summer institute for high school band directors at Vandercook School of Music in Chicago, Illinois. She then served as the band director at the high school in Monticello, Mississippi until her marriage to Dr. John Andrews Langston, a dentist, in 1948. The family relocated to Yazoo City in 1949, where the couple raised their six children. Mrs. Langston was a noted Girl Scout leader in the community for many years.

Mrs. Langston was preceded in death by her husband, who died January 8, 1977. She is survived by her six children: daughters Elizabeth Pennebaker and Janice Allen(Steve) of Bryan, Texas; June DeHart (Dan) of Alexandria, Virginia; and Caroline Jarboe (Brian) of Cheverly, Maryland, and her sons, John, Jr. of Jackson and Paul (Peggy) of Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

She leaves behind six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Donations in her memory may be made to Christian Family Montessori School, 201 Allison Street, NW, Suite B,Washington, DC 20011, or the Inova Fairfax Hospital, Medical Surgical Intensive Care Unit and the Acute Pulmonary Unit, 3300 Gallows Road, Falls Church, VA 22042.
