My name is William Gorman (FAG Member #47658044), My great-grandaunt was Louisa Belle Daniel, oldest child of William Green Daniel and Rebecca Jane Ragan. She married my great-granduncle Henry Thomas Gray in Cooke County, Texas on 11 Aug 1876. There were at least 3 marriages between William Green Daniel and his descendants into the Gray family including William himself who married the widow of Henry Gray's uncle. I have researched William Green Daniel very thoroughly and have developed a pretty good picture of who he was, his many wives and his migrations.

William Green Daniel was born in Tennessee on April 25, 1836 to John Buckley Daniel and Nancy Jane Holmes. He moved with his parents to Tishomingo County, Mississippi in 1849.

William Green Daniel was married five times.

He married first Rebecca Jane Ragan in Tishomingo County,Mississippi on June 10, 1858. They had the following children:
1) Louisa Belle, 1859
2) William Robert, Jul 31, 1861
3) Martha "Mattie". April 17, 1863
4) Mary "Mollie", April 17, 1863
5) Frances Lucinda, November 9, 1966
6) Jessie Banaugh, September 15, 1869
7) John, 1871
William Green Daniel moved his family to Cooke County, Texas arriving Februarr 22, 1871. His wife Rebecca died April 20, 1874.

He married second two-time widow Anna Catherine Clanton Ryan Gray in Cooke County on February 5, 1878. Anna had 4 children from her previous marriages but no children from this marriage. Anna (aka "Annie") died 13 months later on March 25, 1879.

He married third in 1879 or 1880 to widow Vinie McPherson. She died March 07, 1884.

He married fourth in Cooke County, Texas on January 15, 1885 to Nancy W. Jenkins. She died December 19, 1885.

He married fifth in Cooke County, TX on December 02, 1886 to Sarah Jane King. She was the widow of Jesse Pitts PILKINTON. She died January 18, 1894.

Military Service: On August 27, 1861 he enlisted in Capt Joe Wells Co. F, 23rd Mississippi Inf. Vol. Reg. He served the duration of the Civil War and was discharged May 14, 1865.

He was awarded a Confederate Pension by the State of Texas on Sept 26, 1899.

He was living with his son Jesse in Olney, Texas when he died March 16, 1922.

The following is supporting evidence. This represents my own research from original sources.

William Green Daniel was born in Tennessee April 25, 1836. His name first appears as William G. Daniel, age 14, son of John and Nancy
Daniel in the 1850 Federal Census for Tishomingo County, Mississippi, Southern Division, page 88, dwelling 42, (enumeration date 8 Sept850):

From the ages and place of birth of John Daniel's children in the 1850 census, we can determine that he moved his family from Tennessee to Mississippi about 1849.

On June 10, 1858 William G. Daniel married Rebecca J. Ragan in that part of Tishomingo County that would not become Alcorn County, MS until 1870. (Source citation: Hunting For Bears, comp.. Mississippi Marriages, 1776-193, Provo, UT, USA. Also available on Ancestry.com).

Their first daughter, Louisa Belle Daniel was born in 1859. They are living in Tishomingo County, MS in 1860 as recorded in that year's census record. Her middle initial "J" stood for Jane,

1860 Census for Mississippi, Tishomingo County, Blackland P.O., p. 36,dwelling 94:

William G, Daniel enlisted in the 23rd Mississippi Volunteer Infantry Regiment on 27 Aug 1861 and served until honorably discharged on 14 May 1865. (Source: His Texas Confederate Pension Application No. 950, approved 26 Sept 1999).

In 1870, the western half of Tishomingo County was cut away and divided into Alcorn and Prentiss Counties. Alcorn was formed fron the NW part of Tishomingo County and the NE part of Tippah County.

William G, and Rebecca J. Daniel then found that they were living in Prentiss County as recorded in the 1870 Census.

1870 Census for Mississippi, Prentiss, Township 5, Range 6, Booneville P.O., p.14, Dwelling 94.

William G. and Rebecca's last child, John Daniel, was born after the 1870 census date and before they left Mississippi for Texas. (John, age 9, is recorded as being born in Mississippi in the 1880 census record for Cooke County, Texas).

The date of William G, Daniel's arrival in Texas was documented in his 1899 application for a Texas Confederate Pension. On July 20, 1899 William G. Daniel appeared before the County Judge in Cooke County, Texas to apply for a Confederate Pension under a new law enacted by the State of Texas. He swore under oath that he had arrived in Cooke County, Texas on 22 February 1871 and had been a resident of that county ever since (28 years).

William's first wife, Rebecca died April 20, 1874. Since she was only 32 years of age and it had been 3 years since the birth of John, it seems likely that she died in childbirth, also loosing the baby. She is buried in a lone grave in Oak Hill Cemetery in Cooke County about 5 miles east of Spring Valley. Inscription reads: "Rebecca J., w/o W. G. Daniel, born Jul. 20, 1841, died Apr. 20, 1874.

After Rebecca died, William remained a widower and apparently concentrated in developing his farm and raising his children.

At this point, it is necessary to introduce the families of Curren and Hickman Gray who were born in Butler County, Kentucky. Curren came to Burleson County, Texas in 1845. He was married 3 times. He married Emaline Forsythe January 11, 1837 in Butler County, KY. She died before 1842 having borne him no children. Curren then married Sarah Ann Hunn on June 16, 1842 in Butler County. They had 5 children together before Sarah died in Burleson County in 1864. Curren then married Anna Christine Clanton Ryan, a widow with one child whose husband, John Ryan, died in the Civil War. They had two daughters, Jenny born in 1868 and Virginia born in 1873. Curren and Anna with their combined flock of his, hers and their children moved to Cooke County, Texas about 1872...settling in the same area near William G. Daniel.

Meanwhile, Curren's brother Hichman Gray remained in Kentucky and married Mary Ricketts on January 04, 1849. They had four children: Charles, Henry, Ada and Evia (who died as a baby). They were still living in Butler County at the time of the 1870 Census. His son Charles married Drucilla Ann Tuck of Butler County on July 07, 1871. Their first child Leyland was born in Butler County in 1872. After his grandson Leyland was born, Hickman Gray and his entire family moved to Texas, first arriving in Van Zandt County and then moving on to Cooke County and settled near brother his brother Curren Gray and the William G. Daniel families.

According to Cooke County probate records, Curren Gray died there in 1874 leaving his widow Anna to raise their extended family. Cooke County marriage records show that on August 11, 1876 Hickman Gray's son, Henry was married to William Daniel's daughter Louisa Belle. Then, on 05 Feb 1878 Cooke County marriage records show that W. G. Daniel was married to A. C. Gray. This was Curren's widow, Anna Catherine Gray. She died 13 months later on March 25, 1879 and is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery. Her tombstone inscription: "Annie Gray Daniel, w/o W. G. Daniel".

The next record for William G. Daniel is the 1880 Census for Cooke County. This census shows that William has acquired a third wife Vine (Vinie) McPherson, a widow with a 12 year old son named Henry. There is no record of this marriage in the Cooke County marriage records but we can assume they were married between March 1879 when Anna died and the time of the census a year and one half later. We can take note of the close relation of the Daniel and Gray families as Charles Gray, Anna Catherine's nephew by marriage, is enumerated in the next dwelling (#175) after the William Daniel family (dwelling #174).

1880 Census for Cooke County, Texas, Pct 3, ED 114, p. 21

We do not know Vinie's maiden name, but we can refer to her by her first husban's surname, McPherson. Since Henry McPherson was born in Texas in 1868 we know that Vinie McPherson was already living in Texas before 1871 while William Daniel was still living in Mississippi with his first wife Rebecca.

William Daniel's third wife, Vinie E McPherson Daniel, died May 7, 1884. She is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery. Her tombstone inscription: "Vinnie, w/o W. G. Daniel".

W. G. Daniel married the fourth time on 15 Jan 1885 to Nancy W. Jenkins. Nancy W. Jenkins Daniel died Dec. 19, 1885 and is buried in Collinsville Cemetery, Grayson County, Texas. Tombstone Inscription: "Nancy W., w/o W. G. Daniel".

W. G. Daniel married the fifth time on December 02, 1886 to J. S. Pilkinton (aka Sarah Jane King). She died in Cooke County, Texas on January 18, 1894 and was buried in New Hope Cemetery.
