John was the son of William "Charles" Caldwell (2 Mar 1821 - 17 Nov 1901) and his first wife, Mary (Lewis) Caldwell.

In the 1850 U.S. Census, John and his older sister, Susan Caldwell (born c.1841), were probably living with their maternal grandparents, John Lewis (born c.1788) and Lucinda (?) Lewis (born c.1795), in Montgomery County, Maryland.

In the 1860 U.S. Census, John was probably living in Montgomery County, Maryland, with his paternal grandparents, John M. Caldwell (born c.1780) and Hannah (?) Caldwell (born c.1781), and John was a "carpenter."

John married Harriet E. (Williamson) Caldwell ["Hattie"] (Apr 1848 - 26 June 1913) on 10 Dec 1868 in Washington, DC.

In the 1870 U.S. Census, John and Hattie lived in Montgomery County, Maryland, and he was a "merchant." In the 1880 U.S. Census, they lived in Bladensburg, Prince George's County, Maryland, and John was a "carpenter."

In the 1900 U.S. Census, John and Hattie lived in Washington, DC, and he was still a "carpenter." In the 1910 U.S. Census, John and Hattie may have been livin in Prince George's County, Maryland, and he was a "War Dept. laborer." However, John's middle initial was "A." in 1910, but everything else matches John and Hattie.

In the 1920 U.S. Census, the widower John was living in Washington, DC, with the family of Michael Seganish (born c.1897) and Eva Seganish (born c.1899), and he was a "bank watchman." It says that John was the father-in-law of Michael, but possibly John was actually Eva's grandfather.
