The son of Josiah and Freelove (Canfield) Bearce III, Eli Harvey’s birth was recorded at New Milford, Connecticut. His parents moved to Penfield, New York where, as a young man, he served in Lt. Nettleton’s Company of Militia in the War of 1812.

In 1816, he married New York native Sarah Austin, and started a family. In 1821 he built a flatboat and brought his family to Shawneetown, Illinois where they resided for a few years. In April of 1824 the family came to settle permanently in Fulton County, Illinois. Eli was enumerated there as the head of household on the 1830 through 1850 federal censuses.

He was survived by his wife Sarah, and their children Orson Bearce; Hannah (Jacob) Shawver; Lucinda (Jonathan) Bordner; Maria (Moses) Bordner; Benjamin Franklin Bearce; and Mary (James) Winterbottom.
