NORTHAMPTON - Jan R. Smargie, 59, of Pine Street, died Sunday, June 12, 2011. He passed away at home surrounded by family and friends after several months of cancer treatments. Jan was born in Winthrop on Feb. 23, 1952. He was educated in the Methuen public school, just north of Boston.

After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the US Air Force, and was stationed in Columbus, Miss. Upon his discharge from the service, Jan moved to Western Mass to attend the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, where he obtained his graduate degree in nursing, and later, an advanced degree in gerontology. Early on during his nursing career, Jan worked at the Soldier's Home in Holyoke, the Holyoke Medical Center, and Baystate Medical Center. From 1980 until his retirement in 2007, he held various positions at the VA Medical Center in Leeds. There he served as staff nurse, head nurse, nurse educator, CPR instructor and coordinator, and lastly, clinical applications coordinator. Jan was an avid gardener, at times, tending three gardens simultaneously. He was an excellent carpenter who had completed many renovations. His other interests included coin collecting, traveling, skiing and softball.

Jan is survived by his devoted son, Joseph Smargie, of Florence and Joe's close friend, Candi O'Connell; his father, Melie Smargie and his wife Lynn of Chicopee; his twin sister, Janet Gable and her husband Patrick of Pittsfield; his brother, Christopher Smargie also of Pittsfield; his former wife, Linda Smargie of Easthampton; his nieces, Asling and Tara Smargie; his nephews, Bryan and Marc Hickey, and their mother Christine Hickey of Northampton, and many dear and generous friends who have been of great support over the past few months.

Calling hours will be Thursday, June 16, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Czelusniak Funeral Home of Northampton. An in-house service at the Czelusniak Funeral Home of Northampton will be held on Monday, June 20, at 1:45 p.m. followed by burial at St. Mary's Cemetery in Northampton. Friends and family can arrive early Monday to pay their respects, starting at 1:30 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.
