1st Sgt. Calvin R. Graef, served as a member of 200th Coast Artillery from Silver City, New Mexico during WWII. He was captured by the Japanese and survived Bataan Death March.
On October 24, 1944, while being transported as a POW abord a Japanese freighter, 1st Sgt. Graef was one of five prisoners to survive the sinking of the Arisan Maru and make his way to China. The other 1,774 passangers, mostly American POWs died at sea. Tragically, the Arisan Maru was torpedoed by either the submarines USS Shark (SS-314) or the USS Snook (SS-279).
