Author, Literary Critic. He is best known for his volumes of essays, poetry, and short stories. He wrote such books as "The Stranger In Shakespeare," "Love And Death In The American Novel," "Come Back To The Raft Ag'in Huck Honey," "Return Of The Vanishing American," "Freaks: Myths And Images Of The Secret Life," "Being Busted," "An End To Innocence," "Essays In Culture And Politics," and "The Last Jew In America." Also a noted teacher, he taught at many colleges including, Princeton, Harvard, Colombia, and Sorbonne.
