CRASH INJURIES ARE FATAL TO EDINA MAN
Emery Roush, 34, Dies Friday in Quincy Hospital Two Days After Automobile Accident.
CRANKING STALLED CAR
Quincy Motorist Runs Into Rear of Forest Bowen's Durant.

Emery Roush of Edina, 34 years old, died at 9:05 o'clock Friday morning in St. Mary Hospital, Quincy, of injuries sustained at 9:50 o'clock Wednesday evening of last week when he was cranking the Durant car of Forest Bowen, Edina, which was struck by the Ford automobile of Ralph Beckett, Quincy, on Highway No. 24, two miles west of the Mississippi River between Taylor and West Quincy.
At an inquest in Daugherty Memorial, Quincy, Friday afternoon by Eugene Johnston, coroner of Adams County, Illinois, the jury returned a verdict that Mr. Roush's death resulted from extensive internal chest injuries, a fracture of the left arm being a contributory cause. The jury did not establish blame for the accident, bringing in an open verdict.
Mr. Beckett was also seriously injured, sustaining fractures of both knee caps and deep cuts and bruises on his face.
Mr. Bowen, who was standing along side of his car, while Mr. Roush was cranking, was thrown to the ground and knocked unconscious when the automobiles struck. He sustained a severe foot injury.
Miss Eleanor Boyer of Quincy, companion of Mr. Beckett was severely cut on her face, forty-nine stitches being required, as well as other injuries.
Everett Roush, brother of Emery Roush, and Mrs. Everett Roush and Mrs. Stella Upright, who were in the Bowen car, were shaken up, but sustained only minor injuries.
The party from Edina had been to Quincy and was returning home, when their car stalled. At the inquest Friday, the Edinans testified the car had been pushed as far off the slab as possible, an embankment preventing it being completely on the shoulder. Head and tail lights were burning, they said.
Mr. Beckett said the Bowen car was entirely on the slab and that he did not see it until ne was within about ten feet of its rear end, too late to apply his brakes. He was traveling west at a speed of about 40 to 45 miles an hour, he said in a deposition taken by Coroner Johnston, Mr. Beckett being unable to leave the hospital, to which all four injured persons were taken following the accident.
In the crash Mr. Bowen's car ran over Mr. Roush and dragged him about twenty feet, it is said. The Edinan was lying, still conscious, under the rear axle, when removed.
Following Mr. Roush's death, the hearse of Hudson's Funeral Home in Edina was driven to Quincy and the body was brought to the funeral home.
Funeral services were at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon at the Assembly of God Church here by the Rev. Lawrence Spratt of Nelsonville, Mo. Burial was in Mt. Carmel cemetery southwest of Edina.
Surviving Mr. Roush, besides the brother mentioned, are his father and step-mother, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Roush, and a son, Bobby Ralph Roush, all of Edina. Two brothers are dead, Homer and Wilbur Roush, who died Feb. 4 and June 21, 1930, respectively.
Emery Roush was born near Edina Aug. 2, 1901 [sic] a son of Edward and Maggie Roush. He was a lifetime resident of Knox County. He was married a number of years ago, the son, Bobby Ralph Roush, being born to Mr. and Mrs. Roush.
