RICHMOND - Landis D. Baker,
passed away peacefully Fri, June 10, 2011 after a very long and courageous battle with Parkinson's disease. He was born in 1927 in Tiffin, OH, the only son of Howard Baker and Laura Sibrel Baker who lived on a farm near Burgoon, OH. He was preceded in death by his wife of more than 50 years, Elizabeth K. Baker, who was the music librarian at Eastern Kentucky University for more than 30 years and for whom the music library is named. Mr. Baker was a former member, at various times, of both the Army and the Navy during the Korean War where he was stationed in Japan. Following his graduation from Heidelberg College with a Bachelor of Music degree and Ohio University with a Master of Fine Arts degree Mr. Baker moved to Richmond with his wife, Elizabeth, in 1954 to accept a position as a member of the piano/music faculty at Eastern Kentucky State College as EKU was known then and remained there until his retirement in 1978. Shortly after moving to Richmond, Mr. Baker was appointed organist at the First Christian Church and held that position until his retirement in 1983. Following his retirement from EKU Landis Baker continued teaching privately, most notably in the Lexington area. He opened and owned the Piano School in Lexington and operated a piano repair business, traveling throughout the region repairing, reconditioning and tuning pianos.
