Stephen Henry Aldrich enlisted as a Private in Company D, Fourth Michigan Volunteer Infantry on June 20, 1861, at Adrian, Michigan, for 3 years service. He was mustered into Federal service on the same date. Height 5'8½". Complexion light. Eyes blue. Hair brown. Farmer by trade. Served with the Eighteenth Rhode Island Lt. Artillery at Miner's Hill, Virginia. Stephen deserted in June of 1863 along with Private John F. Andrews, at Aquia Creek, Virginia. August 22, 1862, traveling to the Maryland shore in a tree bark raft. He was arrested on November 10, 1863 in Fifth District of Michigan and returned to regiment on December 9, 1863. Stephen was put on detached service with Company E, First Michigan Infantry, by order, July 2, 1864, at Petersburg, Virginia. He was later wounded in the right side between hip and lower ribs by gunshot in front of Petersburg, Virginia on June 20, 1864. On December 5, 1864, he was discharged at expiration of term of service at Petersburg, Virginia. Stephen was employed as a salesman after the war.
