James Philander Swift was the eldest son of Philander Swift and Arzilla Edgbert Swift. On April 9, 1843 James married Mary H Fosdick (daughter of Joel Fosdick and Sally Atwood) and shortly later moved to farm in Illinois with his father and siblings. Their union produced 10 children:
