William Douglas was a son of Burrell Douglas (1825-1884) and Mary Ann Strickland (1830-1869).

He was husband of Rhoda Carter Lee; they married in early 1873, and had a daughter, Mary Ann (Mollie) Douglas, born 23 Aug 1873 and died 26 Apr 1945. Rhoda's stepfather's name was George Lee; her father, who was killed in the Civil War, was Raiford Carter; and her mother was Mary Cox.

William died when riding on a steam engine that blew up on the evening of 29 Jun 1874. The article says they found his body 50 yards in the rear of the train, in a sitting position, scalded to death. He was just 23 years old with a new bride of about 1-1/2 years, and a daughter less than a year old.

He is buried in an unmarked grave that once was marked with a wooden marker that has since been destroyed by mother nature.
