Mallo was a Flint, Michigan, resident. His parents, Fred and Ella (Geiger) Mallo, moved there before Roland was six. He had an older sister, Ruth, and younger siblings Berneata and Jesse.

Mallo was married on 11 September 1927 to Sarah Coralyn Smith in Flint. In 1930, the couple, still living in Flint, had one child, Lavonne, aged one year. They had a second child, Lucille Allison Mallo, born in November 1930. Roland was working in an automobile garage as a "metal bumper."

His name is reported to be Roland G. Mallo, Rolland Mallo or Roland Malta, depending on the source, but the census records are consistent with Mallo as being his last name.
