U.S. Congressman. Entering politics as a young man, he served as a member of the Maine State House of Representatives (1849-50) and served in the Maine State Senate (1851-53). In addition, he was the customhouse officer in Portland, Maine and treasurer of Cumberland County (1862-63). During the Civil War, he served as a Major and paymaster in the Union Army, stationed in Louisiana. After the war, he resided in New Orleans and was appointed Treasury agent for Louisiana, serving 1867-68. Upon the readmission of the State of Louisiana to the Union, he was elected as a Democrat to the Fortieth Congress on July 18, 1868 and served until his death.
