Carolina, Co I, which were the
Wilmington Rifle Guards. The
18th served at first around the
Ft Fisher, Bald Head, Smithfield
area. They then proceeded to
areas below Charleston and then
to the Army of Norhtern Virginia.
He was serving as acting QM Sgt
for the Regiment during that
time. When the Rifle Guards
became Co I Thomas was
promoted to 2nd Lt on June 30,
1862. Present until wounded in
the hip at Battle 2nd Manassas,
VA, Aug 29, 1862. Upon rejoining
his unit he was promoted to
Captain. He served continously
until he was captured along
with many of his comrades at
Spotsylvania Court House in May
12, 1864. He was imprisoned at Ft
Delaware and later sent with 600
other Confederate Officers on a
small ship to Charleston Harbor
to act as Hostages. These men
suffered immensely and many died.
They became known as the
"Immortal 600". Release record
shows him being 5ft. 11 in. tall,
dark complexion, dark hair and
blue eyes.
He was released on June 16, 1865,
after taking the Oath of Allegiance.
