He was the son of American Revolutionary Patriot John Almony and his wife Mary Watson. (See Records of Daughters of American Revolution and Sons of the American Revolution SAR #160713) See Maryland Genealogical Society Journal 55 (2014) p. 215-232 for his biography and family history.

Family Bible of Col. James Almony is transcribed in the Maryland Genealogical Society Bulletin Vo. 40 no. 4 Fall 1999 p. 500-1 by Christos Christou, Jr. Original letters and various family papers exist today that shows he served in the Mexican War in addition to the War of 1812. He was a Capt in 1812 but a Colonel by the time of the Mexican War. He was in his 30s when he married.

BIRTH: His date of birth is given in his family bible as May 4, 1779 and died September 21, 1855. The tombstone gives the same date of death and the age noted calculates to the same birthdate.

SERVICE: 1812 per The British Invasion of MD 1812-1815 by Wm. M. Marine p. 203 Capt. James Almony in 41st Regt. June 1, 1813 (Bel Air Lib. MD Room) His Bounty land provides further information on his wife Mary Sutton and their marriage record and in his own words that he served at Lt. in Capt. William Hitchcock's Company in the 41st Regt of MD commanded by Col. Jacob Small as a volunteer from Baltimore County and served from August 1 1812 for the term of six months and was discharged on Dec 1 1812 in Annapolis City. Per the same file, a letter from the Auditor's Office says he served as Lt. from August 27 1812 to Dec 13 1812 (giving 4 days for mileage) under Col. Jacob Small and as Captain from August 23 1814 to Oct. 27, 1814 under Col. William Hutchins and was granted 160 acres for this service. (Bounty Land Warrant #55-160-14702)

The 41st Regiment was part of the 11th Brigade (Baltimore County). The 11th Brigade defended Hampstead Hill during the Battle of Baltimore. From the Niles Register Saturday September 24, 1814, whole no. 158, no 2 of vol VII., letter from MG Sam Smith to Acting Secretary of War James Monroe HQ-Baltimore September 19th 1814. "....During these movements, the Brigades of Stansbury and Foreman, the seamen and marines under Commodore Rodgers, the Pensylvania volunteers under Cobean and Findley, the Baltimore artillery under Colonel Harris, and the Marine artillery under Capt. Stiles, manned the trenches and the batteries--all prepared to receive the enemy. ......" note: Stanbury led the 11th brigade---"these movements" refer to the action at North Point. (Oct.11th 1814 Baltimore Patriot & Evening Advertiser lists thanks for the following company commanders - Nicholson, Brown, Stiles, Levering, Moales, Pinkney, Sterrett, Adreon,Thompson, Jenkins, Piper, Pikes, Montgomery, M'Donald, Hanna, Fowler, Long, Amey, Magruder, Horton, Barney, Shriver and The Baltimore Beneficial Society.

DEED: James Almony and William Almony of the County of Baltimore to Dixon Slade for $1850 Mar 6 1826 who held a deed of mortgage from the said Slade for part of a tract called Slade's chance in Harford Co and whereas the said Almonys purchased of a certain John Talbott and Mary his wife, Hosea Johns and Penelope his wife of Baltimore City all their undivided part of a land called Slades Chance and Russells Chance in Harford Co heretofore the real estate of William Slade deceased the above mentioned Mary Talbott and Penelope Johns being heirs at law of the said William Slade deceased. William made his mark. witnesses Robert S. Henderson and James Luckey. DB 9 p 182-3 recorded Mar 14 1826

To my son Grandison Almoney that part of my land on which he now resides abt 150 acres. To my son Jefferson Almoney that land which he now cultivates formerly owned by my brother the late Benjamin Almoney, also those two fields adj. on the left side of the land leading up to the house where he now dwells. To my son James Almoney those parcels which I formerly purchased from Mordecai Sutton being about 150 or 160 acres. To my son John Almoney the home lot being part of which I now reside to be divided from the parts devised to son Harrison. My four sons Harrison, Grandison, James and John to pay the following legacies to my son Jefferson $200, to my dau. Elizabeth Brandenbaugh $400, to each of my other daus. Harrison Almony on bond of Jan. 22, 1856, paid 1/3 part to Mary Almony which was willed to her, paid Rachel Ann Almony, adm. of Grandison Almony deceased, 1/5 of the 2/3 share willed to accountant (Harrison), 1/5 to Jefferson, son of deceased, 1/5 to John, a son of deceased, 1/5 to James a son of deceased, each received $663.38, total estate $6,826.60. dated March 29, 1883.
