U.S. Congressman. He completed academic studies, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1845 and commenced to practice law in Harrisonburg, Virginia. He was Commonwealth attorney for Rockingham County, (1852-59) and elected as an Independent Democrat to the Thirty-sixth Congress, serving (1859-61). When Virginia seceded from the Union at the advent of the Civil War in April 1861, he served as a member of the Virginia State House of Delegates, (1863-65). After the war, he was judge of the Virginia twelfth judicial circuit, (1866-69). In 1871, he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-second Congress and to the next four succeeding Congresses, serving until 1881. Declining a unanimous re-nomination, he was commissioner to the World’s Fair at Chicago, in 1893 and practiced law until his death.
