Ellen Bernard Fowle Lee, wife of Robert E. Lee's nephew Fitzhugh Lee, married Fitzhugh in April 1871. At that time Ellen was eighteen-years-old and Fitzhugh Lee was thirty-five-years-old. The union produced seven children, five of whom reached maturity. As befit their father's military affiliation, the two surviving sons were commissioned into the 7th United States Cavalry; each of his daughters married officers in their brothers' regiments.
