Amnerican Astronomer. He was director of the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona, from 1916 to 1952. He made spectrographs of the atmospheres of Jupiter, Saturn, and Uranus. He also photographed Mars and was part of the team that discovered the ninth planet, Pluto, in March 1930.
