U.S. Senator. He attended the University of Mississippi, Vanderbilt University, University of Alabama, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1927 and commenced the practice of law in Forest, Mississippi. He also engaged in agricultural pursuits and was a member of the Mississippi State House of Representatives, (1928-32). In 1941, he was appointed as a Democrat to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Pat Harrison, elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate in 1942, serving until his resignation in 1978. In addition, he also served as President pro tempore of the Senate during the Ninety-second through the Ninety-fifth Congresses.
