VETERAN COAL OPERATOR IS DEAD
Alexander Pollock Cameron, 71, vice president of the Westmoreland Coal Company, and superintendent of the Irwin district of that company died at his home, 508 Main street, Irwin, at 1:30 o'clock this morning, after an illness of more than a year. Mr. Cameron underwent an operation some time ago in the hope of getting relief from his illness He was born on June 20, 1859 in Blossburg, Pa., the son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Cameron. His father was a mine superintendent as was his grandfather who came to America from Scotland in 1847. Mr. Cameron attended Wellsboro and Lafayette Colleges. In 1880 Mr. Cameron entered the employ of the Berwin White Coal Company. Later he was superintendent of the Houtzdale mine. In 1887 he was named supeintendent of the Bolivar Coal and Coke Company at Bolivar. In 1889 he was made superitendent of the Westmoreland Coal Company mines in Claridge. A few years after going to Claridge, Mr. Cameron was named superintendent of the Irwin district of the Westmoreland Coal Company and was appointed vice president of that company a short time later. He was active in Civic affairs in Irwin and vicinity. He was president of the Irwin Savings and Trust Company, director of the First National Bank in Irwin. He was a member of the Kedron Commandary of the Masonic lodge; a Shriner and kindred other organizations. Mr. Cameron was president of the Irwin Kiwanis Club, a member of the Irwin Chamber of Commerce and an elder in the Manor Presbyterian Church. He was also trustee of the Irwin Presbyterian Church and took an active interest in church affairs. Mrs. Cameron died November of 1922. He is suvived by the following children: James R. Cameron, Bluefield, W.Va.; W. Robert Cameron, Philadelphia, Mrs. Wayne Bowers, Woodstock, Va.; Mrs. Harrold Albin, Cherrydale, Va.; Edmund N. Cameron, athletic director at Duke University, Durham, N. Carolina. Serveral grandchildren also survive as well as the following brothers and sisters: W. R. Cameron, Dr. S. P. Cameron, Philadelphia, Mrs. George Ramsey, St. Mary's, Pa.; Mrs. George Gearhart, Lexington, Kentucky, Mrs. H. R. Hourd, Miss Anna Cameron and Miss Christine Cameron of Philadelphia. Funeral services will be conducted from the home in Irwin, Monday afternoon.
