U.S. Senator. Moving with his family to Nevada, in 1906, he graduated from the University of Nevada, in 1926, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1927 and commenced the practice of law in Reno, Nevada. He was a member of the Nevada State Assembly in 1933 and district attorney of Washoe County, (1935-41). During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army, (1941-45) and was discharged a Colonel. After the war, he practiced law and was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Pat McCarran, serving October 1, 1954, to December 1, 1954. Unsuccessful for election to the vacancy, he resumed the practice of law until his death at age 61.
