U.S. Senator. He graduated from DePauw University, studied law, admitted to the bar in 1875 and commenced to practice law in Princeton, Indiana. Moving to Kansas, in 1878, he was a member of the Kansas State House of Representatives, (1882-86) and a member of the World’s Fair Columbian Commission at Chicago, in 1893. In 1901, he was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate, serving until 1906, when he resigned after a charge of illegally receiving compensation for services rendered before a Federal Department. After his resignation he returned to the practice of law and engaged in the newspaper business. After his death at age 70 in California, he was cremated and the ashes deposited in the columbarium of the Los Angeles Crematory Association. In 1928, his ashes were removed for burial in the Burton family plot at Abilene Cemetery.
