Son of Arthur and Emma Ann Dawson of St. James Terrace, Birchington, Kent, England; brother of Cecil J (born 1886), Valentine L (born 1887) and Vincent Amon (1890-1941).
He is commemorated by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
19-year-old Able Seaman Dawson enlisted on 24 April 1915; he was a Ship's Steward by trade.
First posted to 1st Reserve Battalion at Blandford on 4 Aug 1915, he was then sent, on 5 Oct, to "Anson" Battalion which was assigned to the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force.
On 25 Oct his unit was stationed at Mudros West (Lemnos, Greece). At Gallipoli, nine days later, he reports in with tonsilitis; on 13 Nov he is transferred to the No. 1 Canadian Stationary Hospital back in Mudros diagnosed with having enteritis; on 25 Nov he is transferred to 18th Stationary Hospital in Mudros still ill with enteritis.
On 4 Dec Dawson is back at the No. 1 Canadian Stationary Hospital; on the 11 Dec his next-of-kin are informed that he is seriously ill. On 26 Dec he is finally invalided back to England on the H. S. "Aquitania", arriving in Southampton on 2 Jan 1916 and admitted to the University War Hospital. The following day, his enteritis regarded as being dangerous, his next-of-kin once again are informed.
Able Seaman Dawson did not recover from the enteritis and died on 8 Feb 1916.
